A ‘Passport-type’ patent certificate is being introduced so that can be conveniently carried by the patent holder.

On April 27th, KIPO (Commissioner JUN, Sang Woo) announced that KIPO will be issuing passport-type patent certificates in the smaller size when patent holders apply for the certificates starting May 1st.

This improvement in patent certificates was made to increase customers’ convenience.

Currently, the patent certificate comes in an A4 document size. Though the size is good to display in offices, it is too big to carry easily.

With the new portable patent certificate, patent holders can easily prove their patent rights during business negotiations.

Chief BYUN, Hoon Seok of Registration Service Division, Information Policy Bureau of KIPO commented, “This improvement has positively reflected the suggestions put up in our internet homepage. Since the certificate is portable, it will help patent holders during their negotiations with companies.”

In order to support global business, KIPO is also issuing patent certificates in English.

In the English certificate, the names of invention, inventor, and patent holder are translated in English.

Reissuing a patent certificate has become more convenient as well.

Previously, reissuing was limited to lost or damaged certificates.

Under the new policy, reissuing is available when the patent holder is changed due to patent transference. The reissued certificate will then have the name of the new holder.

Chief BYUN, Hoon Seok emphasized, “Focusing on our customers, we will improve our services until customers are satisfied.”
